Active and Engaged: Some North Carolina Higher Education Institutions Offer Free Course Auditing

In 2017, the North Carolina General Assembly enacted a law to allow senior citizens in North Carolina to audit courses for free up to six credit hours per semester. You must be a legal resident of the state to qualify for the waiver, however.

Most community colleges offer this option, but there are some other universities that allow for auditing, which means no academic credit will be awarded. There is other criteria, often institution specific, that involve applications, space available in the course, etc. Please contact any institution in which you are interested to receive specific information.
